Many years ago, Courtney and I celebrated the end of our undergraduate finals on the Terrace, where we sat for hours trying to figure out what to do with ourselves now that the endless studying was over. On Monday, after my sole final exam marked the end of finals week for me, we met once again on the Terrace, this time with a better idea of what to do with our lives.

A friend recently asked me for advice on whether or not to return to Madison for grad school. My advice: come home. This life, spent on the Terrace with old friends as much better versions of our 21 year old selves, is too good to pass up.

Heartbreaking Tearjerker of the Day: In 1988, Nicholas Winton’s wife revealed to the BBC his long-kept secret: He’d saved 669 children from the Nazis at the dawn of World War II through his organization of the Czech Kindertransport. (This clip is from a BBC program that honored the “British Schindler” by inviting some 80 of the children he saved to surprise him in the audience.) In all, more than 5,000 people owe their lives to Winton.

In the more than two decades since the media got wind of his humanitarian exploits, Winton has been knighted, had a minor planet named after him, been commemorated by two statues — one each in Prague and London — and been the subject of three films and a play.

Winton still wears a ring given to him by some of the children he saved. It is inscribed with a line from the Talmud, the book of Jewish law: “Save one life, save the world.” He celebrates his 103rd birthday this week.

Photo Prank of the Day: Marcel the Shell (With Shoes On) co-creator Dean Fleischer-Camp subtly pranks people — including the voice of Marcel, Jenny Slate — by getting them to pose for photos and taking awkward video instead.

This is incredible.

My mom is the best.   She once drove an hour and a half to pick me up and take me to the hospital at 4am, talk about dedication.   She is up for nearly anything and is one of the most fun people I know. She’s hilarious (I wouldn’t have a blog without her), loving, generous, and all around wonderful.  Wendy and I have certainly had our ups and downs but I never doubt how lucky I am to have her.
Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!!!

Happy Mother’s Day, Mom!!!

Today one of my biggest fears came true (second only to tripping). As I was making my way innocently down the sidewalk this morning, a woman with a leaf blower clearly didn’t see me coming. It happened in a split second. I tried to step louder in my flip flops (fail). I stared at her, hoping the pure power of my eyes would cause her to look up (no luck). I tried to make myself become one with the wall as I saw it about to happen in slow motion (there was no escape).

She turned, eyes toward the ground, lifted the blower slightly, and blew dirt, leaves, and who knows what else all. over. me. There is no better way I’d want to start my day.

I have to tell you that over the course of several years as I have talked to friends and family and neighbors when I think about members of my own staff who are in incredibly committed monogamous relationships, same-sex relationships, who are raising kids together, when I think about those soldiers or airmen or marines or sailors who are out there fighting on my behalf and yet feel constrained, even now that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell is gone, because they are not able to commit themselves in a marriage, at a certain point I’ve just concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.

President Obama Embraces Marriage Equality (via enteekaygee)

North Carolina took a big step back yesterday but thankfully Obama has taken a step forward. Last night I was very upset and for the first time wondered if we would ever have equal rights for everyone in this country. But this gives me hope again.

Flashmob of the Day: A flashmob invaded a Copenhagen, Denmark Metro train last month, but in this case, the flashmob was the Copenhagen Philharmonic Orchestra.

They treated unsuspecting commuters to a performance of Grieg’s “Peer Gynt,” and creative agency Makropol captured the whole thing on video.

Right about now, a few people on that train are probably wishing they had taken their earbuds out.

Likely not the intention, this made me cry some big tears. Isn’t life pretty great sometimes?
